OBX Native Knowledge — Our Majestic Dunes

From my Manteo home, I’m fortunate to wake up every morning to a view of Jockey’s Ridge from across the Roanoke sound. Always beautiful, always changing, it is truly one of the most awe-inspiring sites on our beach.

DID YOU KNOW?

Jockey’s Ridge State Park is the home of the highest living sand dune on the East Coast with peaks at more than 90 feet and enough sand to fill up 6 million dump truck loads.

While much attention is given to the famous dunes, the park is also home to three distinct ecological environments:

DUNES

The dunes of Jockey’s Ridge have three peaks. Due to harsh conditions, they harbor no vegetation aside from the American Beach Grass at the base, which is anchored by 40 ft long roots.

While the dunes are always moving, they stay with us due to the push and pull of Northeast and Southwest winds.

MARITIME THICKET

Due to the protection of the dunes, a thicket of live oaks, persimmons and red cedar, plus many more trees and plants grow in the area.

But because of the wind and sand, they look more like shrubs than trees. Foxes, deer, and raccoon abound in this environment.

ROANOKE SOUND ESTUARY

This rich habitat produces plant life that is both ecologically and economically important for our local fisherman as it’s perfect for fish nurseries and blue crabs.
